Tony Henderson’s novel “The Shanghai Circle” is a remarkable work of historical fiction that undoubtedly deserves its five-star rating. The story takes place in Shanghai in 1936. It offers a captivating narrative that transports readers into a world where power, tradition, and vendettas intertwine and shape the fates of its intriguing characters. One of the critical reasons for the total star rating is Henderson’s meticulous attention to historical detail. The vivid portrayal of 1930s Shanghai amidst the chaos of war, displacement, and the dominance of the Triads provides readers with an authentic and immersive experience. The author seamlessly weaves historical events into the narrative, making the setting a character. The character development in “The Shanghai Circle” is masterful, showcasing diverse personalities that add depth and complexity to the storyline.

The central conflict between Cheung Pak-ho and Charles Guest, passed down to their successors, Joseph and Davina, is poignant and gripping. Exploring gender roles in a traditional Chinese society adds an extra layer of intrigue, particularly as Davina strives to break barriers in a male-dominated business world. Every star is well-deserved, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.

The book is perfect and exciting to read. Henderson’s writing style is elegant and descriptive, capturing the era’s essence while still being easy to understand. I also appreciate that there were no noticeable typographical or grammatical errors. Overall, I highly recommend this book as it kept me interested throughout all the chapters with its flawless editing. The author did a great job, and I don’t have any negative criticism to give.

In conclusion, “The Shanghai Circle” by Tony Henderson is a triumph in historical fiction, offering a captivating blend of rich historical detail, compelling characters, and a gripping narrative.
