5 out of 5 stars

Tony Henderson’s historical fiction story ‘The Shanghai Circle’ transported me to the fascinating world of Shanghai in the 1930s. Henderson weaves a complex tapestry of real events and imaginary characters into the lives of Davina, Joseph, and Irina, creating a gripping story.

Davina’s tenacity as she navigates the challenges of running a trading firm in the midst of upheaval is inspiring, and Joseph’s emotional struggle with his triad ancestry gives dimension to the plot. Irina’s position as a stateless woman entrapped by the triads adds another element of stress, generating a sense of urgency that propels the story forward.

Henderson has a unique ability to integrate historical data into his story without overwhelming the reader. The background of the story, which encompasses the imminent threat of war, the rise of communism, and Shanghai’s cultural diversity, is genuine and immersive. The author conducted thorough research to bring this era to life, providing the story with depth and realism.

Tony Henderson’s background and experiences have influenced his decision to delve into the world of historical fiction, which is evident in his book ‘The Shanghai Circle.’ With a career that took him around the world, from Spain to Hong Kong, Henderson has been exposed to diverse cultures and historical events. His passion for research and storytelling is evident in the book as he weaves together a complex tapestry of characters and events set in 1930s Shanghai.

Henderson’s decision to investigate this specific period in history was most likely motivated by a desire to shed light on lesser-known occurrences and convey the character of a city on the verge of change. By combining genuine historical events with fictional characters, he provides the public with a glimpse into a turbulent era marked by peril, intrigue, and the resilience of the human spirit.

The writing was expertly edited, and as a result, the reading went smoothly. I will recommend the book to adult readers due to its strong sexual content and frequent use of profanity. The book is part of the Chinese Circles Series; this is the first book; there are two more books subsequently.

In conclusion, I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars because of its immersive background, compelling work of historical fiction, richly drawn characters, captivating world of danger and deception, and expertly crafted plot. It’s a must-read for anyone seeking an unforgettable literary adventure. And I have no dislike for the book.
