4 out of 5 stars
The novel ‘The Shanghai Circle ‘ is a captivating work of fiction that immerses readers in the compelling drama of pre-war Shanghai on the brink of Japanese invasion. The author’s storytelling skill brings together various characters, each with their burdens of past tragedies, giving depth and authenticity to the story.
In the heart of Shanghai’s underworld, Joseph, heir to the Sung Society, grapples with mastering the complexities of the triad. Amidst a world dominated by vice and violence, he navigates a path marked by an unresolved feud.
Charles and Davina Guest, the revered Taipan and his resilient daughter are at the centre of the narrative, steering their family’s trading house through the shadows cast by the ominous Japanese aggression. Davina’s character, in particular, shines as a tenacious and determined woman, undaunted by the tragic murder of her mother, prepared to take the reins of her father’s company, ‘The Guest.’ Her unwavering spirit propels her into the competitive world of business.
Irina is another intriguing character with a poignant backstory, unwittingly falling into the triads’ clutches, further enriching this enthralling narrative’s tapestry. As the story unfolds, the destinies of these characters become intricately interwoven due to the impending invasion. The novel vividly exposes the societal vices of the era, shedding light on issues such as prostitution and drug abuse.
In conclusion, ‘ The Shanghai Circle ‘ skillfully transports readers to a turbulent pre-war era, offering an absorbing journey. Its well-crafted characters, intricate plot, and evocative portrayal of historical Shanghai make it a compelling choice for historical fiction enthusiasts. My only reservation about the book was its graphic scenes, which I found unsettling. However, while its vivid storytelling shines, the occasionally graphic scenes may not suit all readers, particularly those under eighteen. Overall, the book’s meticulous editing enhances the reading experience, warranting a four out of five star rating, with reservations tied to the graphic content.
