Tony Henderson’s “The Shanghai Circle” plunges you into the intoxicating and perilous world of 1936 Shanghai. This historical fiction novel is a captivating blend of espionage, intrigue, and personal conflict, set against the backdrop of a city teetering on the brink of war.

Henderson’s strength lies in his vivid portrayal of Shanghai. He masterfully paints a picture of a city bursting with contradictions. The opulent mansions of the wealthy stand in stark contrast to the teeming slums and the ruthless Triad underworld. The constant threat of Japanese invasion hangs heavy in the air, adding a layer of tension to every interaction.

The narrative revolves around three compelling characters. There’s Joseph, heir to the powerful Sung Triad, wrestling with his loyalties and yearning for a different life. Davina, a headstrong British woman, fights to keep her family’s business afloat amidst a rapidly changing landscape. Irina, a Russian exile fleeing a dark past, finds herself entangled in the city’s underbelly. As their paths intertwine, they are forced to confront their own demons and make difficult choices in a world where survival is paramount.

“The Shanghai Circle” is a fast-paced read, with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. The well-researched historical details lend authenticity to the story, transporting you back to a time of great upheaval.

However, some readers might find the graphic violence or the occasional pacing issues to be drawbacks.

Overall, “The Shanghai Circle” is a thrilling debut novel that is sure to appeal to fans of historical fiction and anyone who enjoys a good suspense story. Henderson brings 1936 Shanghai to life in all its gritty glory, leaving you eager to see where the characters’ journeys take them next in the series. This book is strictly for adult audiences. This Book deserves 4 out of 5 stars owing to the thriller, historical experiences and survival fighting theme.
