The Shanghai Circle by Tony Henderson is a captivating and historical novel that speaks about life in Shanghai. The book, in the year 1939, follows the life of Joseph Chueng, the son of the triad leader Cheung Pak-ho. The story also follows the life of a wealthy businessman’s daughter, Davina, who tries her best to succeed in life. This book deals with drugs, clubs, prostitution, wars, and more. Read this book to find out more.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed the character development and the use of old technology and transportation. The book details fit nicely in the past, and there were no signs of modern technology. The book also highlights Chinese history and what the aftereffects of the war were. The book showed how much negativity and revenge were passed down to Joseph from his father and how revenge can lead to destruction.
There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like in this book. This book is exceptionally well edited, as I have found no errors. The author showed a great deal of commitment while writing this book and is applauded for it. This book has great suspense and keeps a reader hooked on it till the end to find out the truth. The author also portrays Davina as an independent and a huge example to all females around her as she tries to work her way to success while being in a male-dominated society. I rate this book five out of five stars due to the reasons above.
I recommend this to teenagers over the age of eighteen and to adults as well. This book has sensitive and mature themes such as drugs, prostitution, and sexual scenes that are not suitable for younger readers. This book is well-suited for readers who love to read historical books.
